My research focuses on sterol (e.g. cholesterol) use in insects. Sterols are necessary compounds in all living animals, both as precursors to steroid hormones (e.g. molting hormone) and as membrane inserts. Unlike most organisms, insects cannot make sterols, so to meet sterol requirements insects must acquire sterols from their food. I’m interested in how different plant sterol profiles influence insect performance (including growth and reproduction), the extent to which insects can convert different plant sterols to cholesterol, and what happens when insects ingest sterols that cannot be converted into cholesterol. I am currently studying these questions using a broad range of economically important caterpillars.
