A graduate research assistantship (MS or PhD, but preference is for a PhD) is available starting in the spring/summer (possibly fall) of 2010 to study nutritional physiology in aphids and and plant-feeding hemipterans. We are specifically interested in the effects of different types of plant sterols on soybean aphids, whiteflies, and Lygus bugs. We will also be conducting a survery of sterol profiles from a broad range of economically important plants and the hemipiteran pests that feed on these plants.

This is a collaborative project involving Angela Douglas (at Cornell University, in Ithaca, NY) and Robert Grebenok (at Canisius College, in Buffalo, NY). The graduate student will be based in the Behmer Lab, in the Department of Entomology, at Texas A&M University. Individuals with research interests in insect-plant interactions and insect physiology, plus previous experience working with aphids/hemipterans are strongly preferred.

Potential candiates should send a brief letter that describes their research interests and background experience, unofficial transcripts, GRE scores, C.V., and contact information for three references to Spence Behmer. Individuals interested in persuing a PhD are encouraged to apply for a PhD travel grant so that they can come visit the Behmer Lab and the Department of Entomology. These travel grants are awarded on a competitive basis and provide funds to cover domestic airfare, hotel accommodations, and other travel costs. Travel associated with this award will take place in February 10-13, 2010. More information about these grants can be found here.
